It was originally not a pumpkin. The practice mainly originated as per the Irish myth about a miserable, old drunkard man named Stingy jack, who played tricks on anyone including his family, friends, his mother and even the Devil himself. As the story goes, one fine day, he invited Devil to have a drink with him. But he didn’t want to pay for his drink. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition as he would not bother Jack for one year & that when he should die, also he would not claim his soul. Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree. While Devil was up in the tree, Jack carved the cross sign into the tree’s bark so that the Devil could not come down until he promised him not to bother him for ten more years.
After many years, when jack finally died, he went to the bejeweled gates of heaven, where God would not allow such an unsavory figure into the place of heaven. The Devil, who upset by tricks that played by Jack on him, and remembering his word not to claim his soul, would not give entrance to jack into the hell. He then sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal , just to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and ever since he has been roaming the Earth.
And since then, the Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as Jack of the Lantern, and after that simply called Jack O’Lantern. In Ireland & Scotland, people started to make their own versions of Jack’s lanterns by carving spooky and scary faces into turnips or potatoes & placing them in their windows or doorsteps to frighten away Stingy Jack and other wandering evil spirits as well.
